The first installment of the live-action “Alita: Battle Angel” ended on a bittersweet note. The bitter part is mostly because of Hugo’s (Keean Johnson) sudden death. However, there are reasons it is worth asking if the character could make a surprise return in a sequel.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’ plot, cast speculations
Hugo played an important part in Alita’s (Rosa Salazar) character development. Alita, in return, helped Hugo realize there are better goals to achieve in life rather than engaging in criminal activities to reach Zalem. However, their love story ended tragically when a frantic Hugo forced to climb his way up to Zalem.
In the process, a serrated defense ring dropped on him destroying his body until falls to his death – supposedly. Avid movie and TV fans know one golden rule: if a corpse was not presented, a presumably dead character can always be revived. The same principle might apply in the case of Hugo and the “Alita: Battle Angel 2” plot.
Alita is very likely to achieve Hugo’s dream of reaching Zalem in the sequel. It would then be a meaningful plot twist to have Johnson’s role come back as the titular character continues his fight with Nova (Edward Norton) in “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
Johnson very much supports the making of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” and admits to being a fan of the movie. So much so that he still hopes to see the sequel get made whether or not he will be asked to reprise his role or not.
“After hearing stuff from [James Cameron] and Robert [Rodriguez] about where the world could go – I think the more that could come out, the better it’d get,” Johnson told UNILAD about Alita: Battle Angel 2.” “There’s so many different things that could happen and so much material.”
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’ production rumors
The movie based on the Japanese cyberpunk manga series “Gunnm” found a very dedicated group of fans who address themselves as the Alita Army. They pretty much lead the efforts in convincing the creators and Disney to release “Alita: Battle Angel 2.” Unfortunately, despite a booming online petition and flying a banner over the Oscars 2020 venue, Disney is still mum if the sequel will be in the works.
