Companies and people attached to the making of the live-action adaptation of the “Gunnm” manga series have yet to tell fans anything certain about “Alita: Battle Angel 2.” However, many fans are dedicated to convincing those in charge of making the sequel happen, and it could be because of a surprise appearance at the end of the first movie.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’ plot
At the final minutes of “Alita: Battle Angel,” movie fans saw Alita (Rosa Salazar) fulfilling Hugo’s (Keean Johnson) dream of reaching Zalem. The first film implied this as Alita was shown winning the Motorball tournament that would provide her enough cash to go to the modern city. As her adoptive father, Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz), explained, this is the only real way to reach Zalem.
As Alita fulfills that dream, she was seen raising her sword, pointing up to the direction of Zalem. Watching her from above was the mad scientist Nova (Edward Norton) smirking as if saying Alita poses no threat even if she reaches Zalem in “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
Plot-wise, that sequence was enough build-up to hint that a sequel is possible. Unfortunately, the availability of storyline and materials from the original manga are not enough to guarantee that “Alita: Battle Angel 2” would be released.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’ status
Due to the business aspect of filmmaking, Disney may have to consider how well the first movie did in the box office. The first movie gathered worldwide gross sales of more than $404 million. On the surface, those numbers seem to be a good result. However, Forbes explained that those figures meant that 20th Century Fox only broke even as the first film was reportedly produced with a budget of $170 million.
“Alita: Battle Angel” has a good plot, set of characters, and was produced well – thanks to its blockbuster crew, including director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron. But if Forbes was right, the business aspect of it might explain why, until now, Disney has yet to announce “Alita: Battle Angel 2” even though it has been a year since it finalized its acquisition of 20th Century Fox. It is also impossible to know when is the sequel’s release date without the confirmation that it would be produced.
