“Alita: Battle Angel” did not reach the $100 million mark in box office sales. However, movie fans from all over the world delivered enough support that the film’s total gross ticket sales was double the reported amount of its production budget. There is a chance that it might be what could ensure the production “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’ production made possible by worldwide box earnings?
The release of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” would continue the journey of the titular protagonist, played by Rosa Salazar, in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world. The James Cameron-produced film was based on the Japanese manga series “Battle Angel Alita” by Yukito Kishiro that ran from 1990 to 1995.
IMDb reports that film was produced with around $170 million in the budget. It is important for movies made by United States-based companies to do well in the American box office, but the first movie "only" garnered over $85 million. However, worldwide ticket sales reached more than $319 million. The latter accounts for almost 80 percent of the total box office earnings.
At this point, there is no official indication of whether or not "Alita: Battle Angel 2" will be produced. But since the movie was just released in February, it is not strange that there is little to no new information about the sequel yet.
“Alita: Battle Angel 2” was also released shortly before the merger of 20th Century Fox and Disney were finalized. This major corporate reorganization will certainly affect how the companies will decide to move forward on many of its movie franchises.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’ cast: Who will most likely return
The name Nova (Edward Norton) was mentioned throughout the first film, but the identity of the baddie was not revealed until the very last moment. Nova is a mad scientist, overlord from Zalem, and turned out the be the main perpetrator of all of Alita’s sufferings. When his face was shown in the end, the scene was suggesting that his battles with Alita will continue opening a huge possibility of Norton’s return in “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
As for the titular character, Salazar said in an earlier interview with /FILM what she feels about returning for a sequel. “I would play Alita ‘til my last breath,” Salazar said about being in “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
