‘American Crime’ season 3’s episode 1, titled “Season Three: Episode One,” is set to introduce a new storyline set in North Carolina. Executive producer Michael McDonald revealed in a recent interview that the upcoming season will focus heavily on America’s imbalanced social classes while actress Felicity Huffman teased that it will also address the issue of xenophobia.
The synopsis for “Season Three: Episode One” posted on TV Guide reads, “Season 3 of this anthology series begins, and is set in North Carolina, where undocumented workers toil away for little reward; a woman starts to question the methods of the family farm she married into; and a social worker tries to make a difference.”
ABC renewed the third season of the anthology crime-drama television series on May 2016 and will feature the return of Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, and Regina King as they take on new characters. Huffman and Hutton were series regulars since season 1, with King becoming a regular in season 2.
The first season took place in Modesto, California and followed a war veteran becoming a victim of a home invasion. Season 2 took place in Indianapolis, Indiana and featured a scandal in a private school. The third season is set to take place in Alamance County, North Carolina and follow five people as they struggle through the illusion of the American Dream gone wrong.
During an interview with Variety, executive producer Michael McDonald revealed that the latest season will put focus heavily on America’s social classes as well as issues of prejudice and women’s rights. He said, “The main thing we wanted to tackle is the exploitation of the workforce in America and how people are working to survive and how they’re barely doing so… Modern-day slavery does exists [in America] and we close our eyes to it.”
He continued, “We have these great women, like Felicity and Regina [King] and Lili Taylor, that show us what it’s like to be a woman in America today. The series also covers reproductive rights and women’s healthcare. There is a lot of examination at what it looks like to not have power.”
Huffman also explained that the new season will tackle issues of xenophobia, an intense dislike or deep-rooted fear towards foreigners. She said, “We’re asking the question ‘Does someone have to lose in order for the other to win?’ and ‘How we can stop that divisiveness and come together?'”
‘American Crime’ season 3’s episode 1, titled “Season Three: Episode One,” is scheduled to premiere on ABC on March 12, 2017. It was directed by So Yong Kim and written by John Ridley. It will be followed by episode 2, titled "Season Three: Episode Two," directed by Julie Hebert and scheduled to be released on March 19.
