More reliable sources have reported on the likelihood of the Apple AirTags getting officially launched this year. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has included the Tile-like tracking device to the Apple products he predicts will be unveiled in the coming months.
Apple AirTags release date: Why Apple has not announced it yet
The prediction was made known through a recent research note obtained by MacRumors. Along with the tracker, Kuo also expects Apple to launch an augmented reality-focused product, although it is unclear what kind of device it is.
Kuo’s prediction is not entirely surprising, though. Other known Apple insiders like Jon Prosser have been discussing the imminent release of AirTags, especially in the last quarter of 2020.
The prominent leaker has maintained that its production is pretty much completed, which makes it more interesting why Apple has been delaying its announcement. In a new Front Page Tech video, Prosser explained that the COVID-19 pandemic might have contributed to it in the sense that people staying at home does not pose an urgent need for the AirTags among consumers.
There have also been other solid clues that suggest the imminent announcement of AirTags. Last November, the iOS 14.3 beta was spotted with guide videos and images on how the tracking device can be set up. With these many indications, it can be speculated that the AirTags’ launch could take place very soon.
Apple has been rumored to hold an event in March, likely virtual only, where new products could be announced. Since AirTags is an all-new addition to Apple’s hardware ecosystem and one that would require a demonstration, Apple might opt to announce it during an event instead of simply adding it to their website like they did with the AirPods Max in December.
Apple AirTags design leaks
In the same FPT video, Prosser shared a new leak that reportedly shows the first look at an actual AirTags unit. It looks similar to the 3D render the leaker shared last September suggesting the tracking device would sport a very minimalistic design.
Based on the leaks, the AirTags would be a round device with its front completely plain and in color white. A metal plate is seen in the back where all the labels are engraved, including the device’s name along with the indicator that it supports Bluetooth LE and Ultra-Wideband.
