The Apple Watch 5 is rumored to hit the shelves on Sept. 10, and it appears that details surrounding it is starting to emerge. One of the many speculated features that have been attached to the device is its sleep tracking capabilities.
The rumor first started when the Cupertino-based tech giant acquired Beddit, a company specializing in sleep tracking hardware. As the whispers would have it, the Apple Watch 5 is able to monitor a user’s sleeping pattern and compile the data on a dedicated the Sleep Application using its sensors.
Noises, movement, and heart rate are just some of the things that will be monitored, 9to5Mac reported. The accumulated data will then be transferred to the Health App of the Apple Watch 5, where the quality of sleep will be evaluated.
Apple Watch 5 and the battery solution
The problem here is that the rumors aren’t mentioning a battery upgrade. To remedy this, the Apple Watch 5 will supposedly have a feature that will remind users to charge their device before they hit the sack. Going by this, it appears that the next model’s battery won’t be breaking away from what’s been seen with the fourth entry where it can last up to 18-hours of usage.
There’s also the importance of positioning. Beddr CEO Mike Kisch previously explained why the Apple Watch 5 isn’t the best device to monitor sleeping patterns, Forbes reported.
Apple Watch 5 and the importance of positioning
“Throughout the night when your arm moves around, but your body stays relatively still, tracking the movements of a sleeping person’s body can get tricky when the device is attached to your wrist. Gauging what position you are sleeping in is crucial - and also very difficult to do if your tracker is worn on the wrist,” Kisch said. In any case, it appears that the sleep tracking rumors about the Apple Watch 5 are real after all.
It would be interesting to see how the users will respond to Apple’s solution to the battery problem, especially since there are cheaper alternatives out there that offer sleep tracking features. Of course, since the Apple Watch 5 offers more health tracking benefits, it’s expected that it will perform well in the market. The bad news for Apple is that its competition has been able to catch up in terms of popular wearables, with Samsung and Fitbit the most prominent threat for the Cupertino-based tech giant.
