In a sweeping recall, Tesla addresses a critical inverter flaw in over 2,400 Cybertrucks, risking sudden drive power loss in specific models. Issued by the NHTSA, this sixth recall for the model requires physical repairs to resolve potential safety hazards in affected vehicles.
Tesla Rolls Out Sixth Cybertruck Recall Amid Critical Drive Power Issue
The most recent Cybertruck recall for the all-electric pickup from Tesla is being rolled out this week. Unlike previous recalls, this one actually requires physical service rather than an Over-the-Air update.
With an issue with the drive inverter that might cause a loss of drive power to the wheels, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall for the Cybertruck on Wednesday. The recall went into effect on November 5.
According to the NTHSA records, 2,431 automobiles will be affected by the recall.
MOSFET Inverters Identified as the Root of the Problem
It seems that the MOSFET-based drive inverters are at the root of the problem:
“The subject population includes certain Model Year (MY) 2024 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024, that are or were equipped with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) in the drive inverter. The affected population includes vehicles equipped with Inverter Part number family 1802305 containing MOSFET part number 1530063-2A-B.”
There is no longer any forward motion because the inverter has ceased generating torque. The car might not go forward even though you press the pedal.
Timeline of Tesla’s Investigation into the Inverter Issue
According to records, problems with the abrupt loss of thrust initially surfaced on July 31. By October 23, Tesla had determined that the problem had been limited to VINs with this particular drive inverter; the investigation had begun on August 5, Teslarati reports.
No accidents, deaths, or injuries have been reported as a result of this issue, according to Tesla.
Accelerator pedals, incorrectly bonded bed trim, front wiper failure, and rearview camera malfunctions were the five prior Cybertruck recalls. This is the sixth recall overall.
Specific Models Targeted in Recall
By looking at the number of possibly affected units that the NHTSA discloses, we can usually determine how many Cybertrucks Tesla has manufactured in relation to these recalls. Nonetheless, not every pickup truck manufactured by Tesla is affected by this recall; it is limited to specific models.
