According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to massively produce AirPods with camera modules by 2026. These AirPods will feature voice isolation and other advanced functionalities to enhance user experience.
Apple to Start Mass Production of Camera-Equipped AirPods by 2026, Enhancing Spatial Audio and Interaction
Apple intends to commence mass production of new "AirPods with camera modules" by 2026, according to a recent report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac). This report follows Bloomberg's previous observation of Apple's intentions to incorporate cameras into AirPods in February.
According to Kuo, these new AirPods will be equipped with an infrared camera comparable to the one utilized in the Face ID module of the iPhone and iPad. According to reports, Apple intends to integrate the camera-equipped AirPods with Vision Pro and future Apple Vision headgear.
“The new AirPods is expected to be used with Vision Pro and future Apple headsets to enhance the user experience of spatial audio and strengthen the spatial computing ecosystem. For example, when a user is watching a video with Vision Pro and wearing this new AirPods, if users turn their heads to look in a specific direction, the sound source in that direction can be emphasized to enhance the spatial audio/computing experience.”
Furthermore, the report notes that the IR camera on AirPods has the potential to detect environmental image changes, which could facilitate in-air gesture control and improve human-device interaction.
Kuo observes that Foxconn is the "new product introduction (NPI) supplier" for the IR camera integrated with AirPods. According to reports, Foxconn's annual capacity estimate is 18-20 million units, which equates to approximately 10 million pairs of AirPods.
In February, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is exploring various wearable form factor concepts, including AirPods with cameras. Additionally, the organization is investigating the development of intelligent spectacles comparable to Meta Ray-Bans, a bright ring, and a future iteration of the Apple Watch.
Apple's AirPods Pro to Receive Major Software Updates This Autumn, Introducing Voice Isolation and Voiceless Siri Interactions
AirPods will receive software updates this autumn, as well as significant iOS updates.
Voiceless interactions with Siri
The AirPods Pro 2nd generation (Lightning) and the USB-C variant now have a new "Siri Interactions" feature, eliminating the need to respond vocally to Siri. The function lets users privately respond to Siri inquiries by performing a simple head inclination or shake. - You are no longer required to utter "Hey Siri"each time you employ the voice assistant. Siri interactions are empowered by machine learning on the H2 processor of the 2nd generation AirPods Pro, which allows for voice-free control of notifications, answering calls, and more.
Voice Isolation
Voice Isolation is a significant new feature of the AirPods Pro 2nd generation. Through machine learning, voice isolation can improve the quality of the caller's voice and mitigate external noise, such as wind or construction noise. This enables the transmission of clear calls in any setting. This further enhances the Apple AirPods Pro's capabilities, including Noise Cancellation and Adaptive Transparency for the sounds heard through the earbuds and Voice Isolation for the sounds your caller will listen to.
Personalised Spatial Audio
Personalized Spatial Audio with Dynamic Head Tracking will now be available for gaming, audio, and video. This will apply to the AirPods Pro 2nd generation, AirPods 3rd Gen, and AirPods Max. Additionally, AirPods Pro will be equipped with ultra-low wireless audio latency designed explicitly for mobile gaming.
Another improvement is the implementation of a new developer API for advanced spatial audio in games, as well as an enhanced 16-bit/48kHz voice quality for multiplayer chat.
Availability
Siri Interactions, Voice Isolation, and voice quality enhancements are exclusive to the new AirPods Pro 2nd generation model. They will be free this autumn as part of the AirPods software updates.
