Things are moving more quickly than anticipated in “Attack on Titan” season 3. And in the upcoming episodes, Rod Reiss’ real plans may be unveiled, revealing that he intends to make Historia fight Eren.
In the previous episode of “Attack on Titan” season 3, titled “Pain,” fans witnessed an action-packed combat between Levi and Kenny the Ripper. More importantly, it was suddenly revealed that the members of the Reiss family are the rightful rulers of the kingdom.
This sequence puts Historia and her family at the center of the “Attack on Titan” season 3 plot. Her father, Rod Reiss, is an interesting character right now in the “Attack on Titan” season 3 anime series.
Inverse notes that Rod has always known that he is the rightful king but chose to live a low-profile life as a noble inside Wall Sina. But this does not mean he has zero control of the kingdom of humanity. The same report added that Rod is still strategically ruling his kingdom through the puppet ruler he installed that is Fritz.
Meanwhile, Hange Zoë revealed to Commander Erwin in “Attack on Titan” season 3's "Pain" episode that the Titan Shifting power can be transferred by eating the Titan who has it. After learning that Rod is, technically, still in power, Erwin’s team realized that Rod was the one who ordered for Historia and Eren to be kidnapped.
This was also implied in the “Attack on Titan” season 3, episode 3 preview, where Rod is seen talking to Historia. Meanwhile, the episode, titled “Old Story,” is also hinted to revolve around a secret in the past about Historia that could affect the kingdom and Erwin greatly.
Meanwhile, Rod can be expected to reclaim the throne. And when he does, he might want to make sure that the Reiss family will never lose it again — a possible arc to be tackled in “Attack on Titan” season 3. To do this, he must ensure to defeat the strongest Titans in the kingdom and contain that power within their family.
With that, Rod could be planning to force Titan Historia in fighting and eating Titan Eren. This way, the Reiss family could limit a very strong Titan Shifting power within their family.
