Audi and SAIC Motor have established a new innovation hub in Shanghai to accelerate the development of intelligent vehicles for the China-exclusive AUDI brand, the companies announced on Thursday.
The joint venture will focus on technologies tailored to the rapidly evolving Chinese premium vehicle market. Key development areas include vehicle and driving-control systems, artificial intelligence-powered immersive smart cockpits and next-generation advanced driver-assistance systems.
Audi and SAIC did not disclose the ownership structure or financial details of the new venture.
The partnership deepens cooperation between Audi, the premium vehicle subsidiary of Volkswagen, and SAIC Motor, one of China's largest automakers. The companies aim to combine Audi's premium automotive expertise with SAIC's knowledge of China's increasingly technology-focused car market.
Under their expanded collaboration, Audi and SAIC will jointly develop four new AUDI models based on the Audi ADP 2.0 platform. The dedicated vehicle architecture is designed to support a new generation of intelligent and connected vehicles specifically targeting Chinese consumers.
The four planned vehicles will broaden the AUDI product portfolio in China as the German automaker seeks to strengthen its position in the world's largest automotive market.
The first model developed under the new program is scheduled to launch in 2028, with additional vehicles expected to follow.
The Shanghai innovation hub highlights Audi's strategy of developing products more closely around the preferences of Chinese customers, particularly as demand grows for advanced connectivity, AI-powered vehicle features and sophisticated driver-assistance technology.
China's automotive industry has become increasingly competitive as domestic manufacturers rapidly introduce electric and intelligent vehicles equipped with advanced digital features. Audi's partnership with SAIC gives the German premium brand access to local development capabilities as it works to bring new models to market faster.
The initiative also marks another step in Volkswagen Group's broader effort to expand its technology partnerships and maintain competitiveness in China's fast-changing automotive sector.
