Mechanical slot machines are no longer used at casinos, but they have become a collector’s item. Betsafe has recently announced it will be restoring old mechanical slot machines to get them working again.
The marketing team for Betsafe Canada recently announced that it would be starting a restoration project of classic slot machines. The project and all its progress can be followed on the brand’s blog and social media pages, allowing people to see what goes on inside one of these classic machines.
Slot machines have been around for well over 100 years, with the very first machine created in 1897. This device, known as the Liberty Bell slot machine, contained a quite simple mechanism that operated a single reel on a pull lever. Players would insert a coin and use the lever to operate the machine and watch as the reel spun to see if the symbols matched up.
Over the years, slot machines got more complex as new mechanisms for automatic payouts were created. This led to the devices becoming increasingly popular, and slot machines could soon be found in bars, restaurants, cafes, and casinos all over the world. The machines were popular because they were quite easy to play and could potentially pay out big cash prizes.
Eventually, mechanical machines were phased out as technology improved and allowed slots to become digital. Modern casinos offer lots of different types of video slots, which use computers to determine the outcome of a spin and a screen to display the action. Computers allowed slots to become more complex, offering more symbols and reels as well as bigger payouts. Today, it is possible to choose from hundreds of different slots at a Canadian Online Casino.
Although mechanical slots are no longer found at casinos, they offer a lot of nostalgia and are interesting machines. Many slot machines are now over 100 years old and if meticulously restored, can work just as well as the day they were manufactured. Betsafe wanted to see what kind of classic slots they could find and how they could be restored.
The Beromat B
For their first project, the Betsafe team uncovered a class Beromat B mechanical slot. This three-reel slot was hand powered, simply requiring a coin and a pull of the lever to start the reels turning. It was first produced in the 1950s by Wulff Apparatebau. The device is no longer being manufactured but was extremely popular in its day. The fact that it did not need to be plugged in was a big advantage, and the machine was widely used in a lot of establishments across Europe.
The Betsafe team found a suitable Beromat B slot machine in Central Europe, where they purchased it from a private seller before bringing it back to their studio. The first step in the actual restoration process involved taking the entire machine apart and cataloguing it piece by piece. Once that was done, the team could properly assess the kind of work that needed to be done, and they also produced an infographic outlining the role of all the major pieces.
The final step in the restoration process involved completely renewing the external machine housing as well as ensuring all the mechanical parts worked correctly. For this, the team has had to completely replace the broken reel mechanism, which has been the hardest part of the whole project so far. Because the machine is no longer being manufactured, it is not possible to simply order a new part to replace any that are lost or damaged.
Once the project is complete, the Betsafe team will have a working model of this classic slot machine, and it will be well worth the time and effort invested into it.
