‘Black Mirror’ released a bizarre new promotional video for Netflix that introduced a streaming service called “Netflix Vista”, which allowed users to enjoy their favorite shows in their own head. It mimicked season 1’s episode 3, entitled “The Entire History of You.”
According to The Independent, Netflix released a two-minute long advert that featured the streaming service alongside a promotional tour of the episodes of ‘Black Mirror’ season 3. It depicted technology seemingly ripped out of season 1’s terrifying episode 3, entitled "The Entire History of You,” which starred Toby Kebbell, Jodie Whittaker, and Tom Cullen.
The online advert seemed to be an entire episode of ‘Black Mirror’ itself, seemingly promoting Netflix’s new service called “Netflix Vista.” It imagined a world where technology allows viewers to watch series anytime and anywhere by switching on a chip implanted on their necks. Eyes turn white as Netflix is automatically visible in a viewer’s vision as enabled by a lens system installed in their heads.
The promotional video also featured clips of various episodes – from “Playtest”, to “San Junipero”, all the way to “Hated in the Nation.” The most unsettling points of the video were when people hardly interacted in situations such as visiting the sick in the hospital or having a quiet dinner with their spouse because they were more focused on watching an episode of television in their heads.
The episode "The Entire History of You,” imagines an alternate reality where people have a “grain” implanted just behind their ear that records every moment of someone’s life. One simply uses a remote control to access past memories, which can subsequently be played out in a person’s line of vision or through a television screen as a “re-do.”
Kebbell plays a young lawyer named Liam who arrives at a dinner party hosted by one of his wife’s friends. His wife Ffion then introduces him to a man named Jonas, who he later realizes was one of her past boyfriends although she denied it at first. Things get nasty when Liam uncovers more truths behind Ffion and Jonas’ relationship by means of the implanted “grains.”
According to GameNGuide, Robert Downey Jr. bought the rights to Charlie Brooker’s episode back in 2013 as part of plans for a possible feature-film adaptation. It was reported that Downey Jr. won over the rights from George Clooney, who was also interested in the story.
‘Black Mirror’ is a science-fiction and satire television anthology series that depicts the dark side of future technology. It originally aired on Channel 4 before being acquired by Netflix for season 3. Season 3 was released worldwide on October 21, 2016.
