Scarlett Johansson is set to return as the “Black Widow” not in the “Avengers” but in her own solo movie. She began portraying Natalia Alianovna Romanova a.k.a. Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010 via “Iron Man 2” and since then she has always been cast to join the Marvel movies.
According to Radio Times, “Black Widow” is expected to start filming in London this coming June. Since Johansson’s solo movie has yet to go into production, it has no premiere date yet.
The plot of “Black Widow” is being kept a secret until now, but in her previous interview, Johansson talked about her movie a bit. The actress stated that she feels that her much-anticipated stand-alone MCU film will eventually happen since Marvel and Disney has not officially announced the movie yet.
"I think everything happens when it's supposed to. All I'll say is that I think I have a greater understanding of the character now than I ever possibly could have had before,” Johansson told Mark Malkin of Variety during the iHeartMedia’s “The Big Ticket” podcast when asked why “Black Widow” did not happen earlier. “Whatever iteration you see of this character, may or may not see of this character in the future, will be the better because of it."
While there is no clear information about the exact plot of “Black Widow,” it is widely believed that it will reveal more backstory of Natalia. Aside from her training to be a spy and assassin at the KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), perhaps her life before that will also be touched on for the viewers to understand her character better.
“Black Widow” will star Scarlett Johansson and reportedly, she will be supported by an excellent actor lineup that includes Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, and OT Fagbenle. It was rumored that Jac Schaeffer had been assigned to pen the movie while Cate Shortland is likely to direct.
