“Overwatch” is one of the biggest online, multiplayer games in the world right now, but Blizzard wants it to get even bigger by adding a World Cup tournament during this year’s “BlizzCon.” This should add some fire in the bellies of those who performed best during the first seasons of “Competitive Play,” which is set to end on Aug. 17.
The announcement was made on the official Overwatch website, inviting players of all kinds to participate.
“The Overwatch World Cup will be an international exhibition pitting teams from multiple nations and regions against one another in a battle for global glory” the post reads. “The celebration begins with communities around the world voting for which players they'd like to see represent their country. Teams will then compete in a series of exhibition matches online and, ultimately, on the BlizzCon 2016 stage!”
During last year’s “BlizzCon” World Tournament, the event was focused on “Hearthstone,” Heavy reports. For this year, the event will be broken into two phases. The first phase will involve a vote by players to determine which representative will be participating in the event. The players who will be eligible for the vote are those who performed well during Competitive Play and who are well-known in the industry.
Speaking of Competitive Play, the deadline has been announced by Blizzard via a forum post at Battle.net, TechTimes reports. The announcement included pertinent details such as the prizes that the players who performed the best as well as the exact time when the event will end, which will be on Aug. 17 5:00 p.m. PT.
In terms of the prizes, players who earned higher SRs will get more CPs, which players will then be able to use to buy weapon skins. Players who earned higher ranks will also special sprays, as well as player icons for their trouble. Season 2 of Competitive Play will start on Sept. 6.
