LG CNS launched its blockchain-based identification cards for staff called the DDIDID. This is a kind of service that uses blockchain technology for mobile IDs.
LG CNS has already started distributing these innovative ID cards to its own employees, and the company confirmed this on Tuesday this week. As per The Korea Times, the DDIDID can be used for many purposes, and it can replicate most of the functions of regular plastic ID cards.
Some of the uses may include paying for food or beverages at coffee shops and entering the company’s cafeteria. The subsidiary of LG Corporation that provides information technology services also revealed that it would add more functions for the blockchain-based DDIDID soon, such as the signing of electronic contracts using the mobile ID, riding public commuter buses, and issuance of different certificates.
LG CNS said that the mobile ID’s name stands for “digital distributed identity” verification technology. This was developed so that employees can better manage their personal information on their mobile devices and easily distribute these details when needed.
Staff who will use the DDIDID will have their personal identification information stored on their smartphones. In case they use a service that needs their identity verification, they can simply provide the required information through their mobile ID.
LG CNS said that this blockchain-based ID technology would prevent personal data leaks as well as malicious cyber intrusions. This is because the system will only provide information that is needed for certain transactions. For instance, in the cafeteria, the ID will only reveal the owner's ID number and withhold other personal details like phone and resident registration number since those are not necessary for this situation.
"We will expand DDIDID to a blockchain-based digital identity verification program to provide a variety of services that increase people's convenience while guaranteeing individuals the authority to manage and utilize their personal data," an official at LG CNS stated.
