The previous episode of “Boruto” saw the gang solving a mystery that involves the supernatural and showcasing some gags along the way. It was basically a callback to the days when anime was derivative of other anime. In “Boruto” Episode 109, this trend is likely to continue with the group running into Choji in a hungry and powerless state. This can only mean that the gag arc will continue.
With the last episode being a fairly standard comedy fare, Anime News Network notes, “Boruto” Episode 109 is expected to be pretty much the same way. The group will run into trouble that they will need to help solve, almost making the anime into a series of “Scooby-Doo” references. For the next one, the trouble will involve a hungry Choji who might need to move a rock or something.
At least, this is what the preview appears to be suggesting, as seen below. The title of “Boruto” Episode 109 will be “The Steam Ninja Scrolls: Potato Chips and the Giant Boulder.” The headline alone is already quite telling of what kind of gag episode this is going to be. This kind of humor might apply to many viewers, but it is unlikely to move a lot of others.
Simply put, “Boruto” Episode 109 is just going to be another addition in a long line of episodes and arcs for the anime that have absolutely nothing to do with the main plot. Far from advancing fan appreciation of the anime, these filler episodes are only serving to further divide the community. The effects of alienating viewers who don’t appreciate the episodes cannot be discounted, as well.
At this rate, even when the anime does return to its more holistic route, it would be too late for many viewers. For now, though, those who remain will have no choice but to watch “Boruto” Episode 109 on June 2.
