British Prime Minister Theresa May has outlined her vision for the path that lies ahead of the country in her first major speech on Brexit. Speaking at Tory Party’s national conference, she said that the United Kingdom would become fully independent and sovereign. According to her, Britain would try to take full control of the immigration and would refuse to accept the jurisdiction of the European court of Justice. She said that she would work towards giving the British companies a maximum freedom to trade and operate in the single market but not at the expense of allowing free movement or accepting jurisdiction from judges in Luxembourg. Following are the key highlights:
- She said that Britain would trigger Article 50 and formally begin the negotiation process by March next year.
- The government will introduce “Great Repeal bill” in the Queen’s speech next year, which would preserve all current EU laws as British laws and EU laws would no longer override British legislature. The bill would repeal 1972 European communities Act and that would end the jurisdiction of European Court of Justice.
- She rejected the idea of a second referendum and criticized those who have been trying to undermine the wish of the majority that the UK should exit the EU.
Her speech outline that she would be tough on the negotiations. Mrs. May said, “The process we are about to begin is not about negotiating all of our sovereignty away again,”
