“Bull” Season 3 opened with a haymaker as the premiere episode killed off a major character, Carter Matt reported. The development blindsided the audience because everyone thought Cable (Annabelle Attanasio) was merely late for work. However, as the episode neared its end, Chunk (Christopher Jackson) finally revealed that Cable was actually one of the victims of a recent bridge collapse.
So what exactly prompted the decision to write off Cable? Showrunner Glenn Gordon revealed that it wasn’t their decision to get the character killed in “Bull” Season 3 but Attanasio's.
“Annabelle, who’s a terrific actress, came to us about three-quarters of the way through last season and said, ‘I have this opportunity that means the world to me. is there any way we could make that work?’ I said to the network at the time that the idea of having someone in the cast who wants to be someplace else made no sense to me,” Gordon said. So the showrunner created a storyline that would kill off Cable and kick-start character developments in “Bull” Season 3.
In real life, most people would undergo varying personality changes when reminded of their own mortality. As such, Gordon used Cable’s death to humble some of the characters that have inflated egos. Indeed, Bull (Michael Weatherly) is already making this transformation in the premiere episode of “Bull” Season 3 when he gave $2 million to the woman who was desperately in need of a liver transplant.
What’s more interesting is that the decision also surprised the short-tempered TAC (Trial Analysis Corporation) head himself. The act of kindness was rather new to Bull as the character has been portrayed as someone who is remarkably arrogant. But now that Cable is dead coupled with his recent recovery from a heart attack, he’s reminded that no matter his station in life, he’s as fragile as everyone else. And this journey that “Bull” Season 3 started is what makes this recent installment interesting.
Gordon said that Bull will start questioning his decision that led to this moment, an introspection that will produce incremental growth for the character. The second episode of “Bull” Season 3 will air on Oct. 1.
