There is barely a couple of days left before “Outlander” season 4 officially premieres so all teasers and spoilers can now be read online. With that, it is time to learn more about the behind-the-scene moments Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe share in filming the TV show.
It would not be hard to guess that fans are most interested in how Balfe and Heughan make all the steamy sex scenes convincing. Obviously, the actors are way past the awkward phase but they also revealed that the environment can be quite a tricky element in filming these scenes.
As earlier reported, the “Outlander” season 4 opener includes another love scene between Heughan’s Jamie Fraser and Balfe’s Claire Fraser. Interestingly, the cast and crew were obliged to film it twice.
In an interview with TVLine, Sam Heughan said, “There is a nookie scene where, when we were shooting it, it [was] so freaking cold.” Caitriona Balfe spilled more details about it and revealed that the harsh weather later forced them to take another shot at the scene.
Balfe said they first filmed this particular “Outlander” season 4 love scene in the month of November “when it was freezing cold.” Given the temperature at the time, Balfe and Heughan filmed the scene “fully clothed.” The actress added, “We tried to make it as sexy as possible — and I think they decided it wasn’t sexy enough.”
Both Balfe and Heughan also recalled having to deal with midges (a type of small flies) aside from filming a hot, love scene under a cold, harsh weather. “So you can do something a little bit more nude at that time, but you’re always dealing with the elements,” Balfe added.
“Outlander” season 4 will premiere on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 9 p.m. ET on Starz. Fans will find Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe’s characters arriving in America and how they start to chase their own American dream.
