The California attorney general has subpoenaed Exxon Mobil Corp. in connection with an investigation into “deception” over the impact that recycling will have on plastic pollution.
Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office is looking into whether fossil fuel companies, plastics processors, and others deceived the public.
Bonta accused Exxon and others of waging a public relations operation to spread the illusion that recycling can address the plastics challenge.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, only around 9 percent of all plastic in the United States is recycled. EPA stands for Environmental Protection Agency. PET bottles have a recycling rate of around 28 percent. According to Bonta, California spends almost $500 million per year cleaning up plastic pollution.
