It’s official. “Dark Souls 3” is the last in the franchise, at least for the moment. From Software President, Hidetaka Miyazaki made the confirmation himself, which means that the “Ashes of Ariandel” DLC will be the last chapter of the series for some time. In lighter news, Miyazaki also confirmed that they are working on three new titles. One of them is a new “Armored Core” game.
When asked by Kotaku to clarify his stance on creating another Souls game during a recent Bandai Namco roundtable, Miyazaki responded that he would not be the one to do it. This doesn’t mean that there won’t be a future installment to the hit franchise down the road. Someone else will simply have to do it, preferably someone from the studio.
“For me, Dark Souls III is the end,” Miyazaki clarified. “But that doesn’t mean the end for Dark Souls. If someone other than myself, like another staff member, wants to make a Dark Souls, then I don’t want to deny others from making future installments.”
It’s worth noting that the original translation of Miyazaki’s statements left the part about his involvement in the series ending as opposed to just the series itself. Based on what he actually said, it’s clear that there is still a possibility for a future Dark Souls game as long as someone is willing to make it.
So, what could be so important that From Software has decided to put their most lucrative IP on hold? As IGN reports, the company is currently busy with three new games. One of these titles is “Armored Core,” which should be great news to fans of the series.
Miyazaki refused to elaborate on what the game will involve and no information regarding the two other games has been revealed either. What he did stress is how weird one of the games will be, which is sort of promising given the nature of the “Souls” franchise.
