In an attempt to get back to its roots, Activision will be releasing details about its upcoming first-person shooter game set in the second World War, aptly named Call of Duty: WWII. Although the video game industry has known about this project for quite some time, the specifics are still lacking. Considering just how much is at stake for the publisher this time around, critics and fans are expecting something good.
The COD franchise was built on the World War II premise, with some of the earliest games featuring several of the most iconic locations and battles during the historic conflict. According to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg, this was simply the natural course of the franchise, Polygon reports.
“It always seems to happen like that,” Hirshberg said. “We're all plugged into the same cultural rhythms to a certain extent. Specifically, to us, three years ago when we greenlit this thing, we definitely just thought it was time to take the franchise back to its roots.”
One of the most noteworthy aspects of this new installment to the iconic franchise is the fact that Sledgehammer Games studio will be at the helm of developing the project. Fans of the series will be familiar with the studio’s work, which is the wildly popular Advanced Warfare featuring futuristic weaponry and Kevin Spacey as the main antagonist.
It would certainly be interesting to see how the developers transition from such a sci-fi centered game to one with drastically different elements. Based on the leaked details so far, the studio will have its hands full with the challenge of accurately portraying some iconic moments during the war, which could include D-Day, Forbes reports.
Naturally, the weaponry and the features of the arsenal will be different from what modern COD fans have gotten used to. Then again, for those who also played Battlefield 1, the change won’t likely seem so drastic.
