Most of the time, developers and publishers really don’t mind when content creators stream gaming sessions involving their titles for everyone to see. One of the exceptions is Atlus, the development studio behind the widely acclaimed Persona 5 JRPG. The Japanese company just issued a warning to players against streaming too much of the game’s content.
Sharing videos and live-streaming playthroughs of the newest video games have been standard practices in the industry for a few years now, ever since platforms like YouTube really took off. Thanks to P5’s linear storyline, however, the game has a lot of surprises and twists that might be spoiled by this trend. This is something that Atlus wants to stop at all costs, Gamespot reports.
The studio is not playing around with its warnings, either. Among the actions that it says it is prepared to take include issuing a content claims and even having the accounts of the streamers suspended.
On Atlus America’s official website, the team detailed what the main office in Japan does not want players to do. A lot of it has to do with spoilers when they stream beyond a certain point in the game.
“Simply put, we don’t want the experience to be spoiled for people who haven’t played the game,” the post reads. “Our fans have waited years for the game to come out and we really want to make sure they can experience it fully as a totally new adventure.”
Naturally, not everyone is thrilled by what basically amounts to a gag order. Kotaku is particularly incensed by Atlus’ actions, saying that the company has no chill. The publication also pointed to the disabled sharing feature of the game on the PlayStation 4.
This isn’t the first time that video game studios have expressed distaste for streaming activities that spoil games for others. Nintendo is notorious for being touchy about gaming details.
