‘Doctor Strange’ actor Benedict Wong revealed that his character, aptly named Wong, will be different from the original Marvel comic books. He teased new details on his mysterious role saying that he is also a master of sorcery and not a servant.
According to Den of Geek, Wong’s mysterious role will be depicted rather differently on the big screen. He is set to play a character named Wong on director Scott Derrickson’s upcoming live-action film featuring one of Marvel’s most iconic superheroes.
Wong revealed, “I’m certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant. We’re heading in a different direction. He’s more of a drill sergeant… There isn’t any martial arts for Wong in Doctor Strange actually, he’s more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He’s one of the masters of sorcery.”
According to another article on Newsarama, Wong expressed his enthusiasm over possibly reprising his role in follow-ups. He said, "That would be nice!" replied the actor. "No, we’ll start off with the first one. I’m just happy nearly completing in Doctor Strange. I’m very excited to see what happens.”
The 54-year old British actor is best known for his roles in several feature films including Ridley Scott’s science-fiction blockbusters ‘Prometheus’ and ‘The Martian’. He also played Kublai Khan on the Netflix television series ‘Marco Polo’.
He joins an ensemble cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange a.k.a. Doctor Strange, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Karl Mordo.
Derrickson’s upcoming film is intended to be the 14th film in the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It is the second film in the MCU’s Phase Three. It follows Joe and Anthony Russo’s successful ‘Captain America: Civil War’, released last May.
It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Kevin Feige is serving as producer while Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, and Charles Newirth are executive producing.
‘Doctor Strange’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film scheduled to be released on November 4, 2016. The film began principal photography on November 2015 in Nepal and concluded on April 2016 in New York City. It is currently in post-production.
