As the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump’s tenure from 2017 to 2021 was marked by a series of major policy shifts and controversial decisions that have left a lasting impact on the country’s political landscape. While Trump's presidency was often accompanied by media scrutiny and political opposition, his administration claimed several key accomplishments in both domestic and foreign policy that reshaped America's position in the world and altered the course of its economy.
One of Trump’s most significant achievements was the implementation of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. This sweeping tax reform legislation lowered the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, with the goal of spurring investment, increasing business competitiveness, and boosting economic growth. The administration credited the tax cuts with contributing to robust job growth and record low unemployment, particularly in minority communities, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global economy. Although the long-term effects of the tax reforms are debated, supporters cite it as one of Trump's signature economic achievements.
Another area where Trump left his mark was deregulation. His administration aggressively rolled back numerous federal regulations, particularly those affecting businesses and industries like energy, healthcare, and finance. By reducing regulatory constraints, Trump argued that these actions helped to foster economic growth and innovation. Critics, however, raised concerns about the potential environmental and public health consequences of deregulating industries such as oil and gas.
On the foreign policy front, Trump’s presidency was characterized by a shift toward an “America First” agenda. His administration took a hard stance on trade, particularly with China, imposing tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of goods in an effort to renegotiate trade agreements. Trump also signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and was designed to modernize trade relations among the three countries. Supporters of the USMCA lauded it for updating labor and environmental standards, while opponents criticized the administration’s use of tariffs as part of its trade strategy.
Trump’s approach to foreign diplomacy also included historic engagements with North Korea. In 2018, he became the first sitting U.S. president to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, signaling a willingness to negotiate on nuclear disarmament. Although these efforts did not result in a formal agreement, the summits were notable for their symbolic importance and for breaking decades of diplomatic isolation between the two nations.
In the judicial realm, Trump had a profound influence on the federal judiciary. He appointed three Supreme Court justices—Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett—shifting the ideological balance of the court to a conservative majority. Additionally, Trump appointed numerous federal judges, leaving a significant imprint on the judiciary that will endure well beyond his presidency.
However, Trump's tenure was also marred by controversy, particularly his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. These events have led to ongoing debates about his legacy and the long-term impact of his presidency.
