Donald Trump, 78, has officially announced his running mate for the 2024 presidential election. The former President confirmed Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, 39, as his vice-president pick, bypassing other rumored candidates such as Marco Rubio, Doug Burgum and ousted Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The announcement was made on Monday, July 15, through Trump’s Truth Social platform.
In his statement, Trump expressed confidence in his choice: “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.”
Trump praised Vance’s background and achievements, highlighting his Marine Corps service, academic success at Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and business career. “J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association,” Trump noted.
Trump also referenced Vance’s bestselling book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which was adapted into a movie, as a testament to his advocacy for hardworking Americans. “J.D.’s book, Hillbilly Elegy, became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country,” Trump added.
The announcement further detailed Vance’s expected role in the campaign, emphasizing his focus on American workers and farmers in critical states. “J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” Trump said.
Despite this endorsement, Vance has faced criticism for his controversial views. During a February interview with ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos, Vance argued that the President could, under certain circumstances, defy a Supreme Court ruling. “The Constitution says that the Supreme Court can make rulings, but if the Supreme Court...said that the president can't fire a general, that would be an illegitimate ruling, and the president has to have Article 2 prerogative under the Constitution to actually run the military as he sees fit,” Vance stated.
This assertion led to a heated exchange, with Stephanopoulos expressing shock at Vance’s stance. “You made it very clear, the president can defy the Supreme Court. Thanks for your time this morning,” Stephanopoulos replied, cutting off Vance’s mic.
The selection of Vance as Trump’s running mate signals a strategic move to solidify support among conservative voters. Trump’s team underscored the announcement's significance in an internal memo to campaign staffers, stating, “In moments of tragedy and horror, we must be resolute in our mission to re-elect President Trump. It is our fervent hope that this horrendous act will bring our team, and indeed the nation, together in unity and we must renew our commitment to safety and peace for our country.”
The memo continued, “The RNC Convention will continue as planned in Milwaukee, where we will nominate our President to be the brave and fearless nominee of our Party. We appreciate your dedication and perseverance and are thankful for each and every one of you.”
As Trump’s campaign gears up for the 2024 election, adding Vance to the ticket aims to bolster their appeal and strengthen their position against President Biden.
