The reports of Donald Trump’s snide comments towards the fallen US soldiers surfaced over the weekend, earning him a lot of backlash despite repeatedly denying that he made such statements. Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger recently called out Trump and criticized him for his comments on Twitter.
In a nine-tweet thread, Capt. Sullenberger called Trump unfit for office and criticized his disrespect for the military, its veterans, and the soldiers who died in combat. Despite constantly denying the claims made by the reports first brought to light by The Atlantic, former senior administration officials who chose to stay anonymous have confirmed Trump is making such comments behind closed doors.
“For the first time in American history, a president has repeatedly shown utter and vulgar contempt and disrespect for those who have served and died serving the country. While I am not surprised, I am disgusted by the current occupant of the Oval Office. He has repeatedly and consistently shown himself to be utterly unfit for and to have no respect for the office he holds,” tweeted Sullenberger.
Trump was revealed to skip a ceremony honoring US military veterans and referred to the dead American soldiers, including Marines, as “suckers” and “losers.” Trump was also revealed to have canceled a trip to the Aisle-Marne cemetery in France back in 2018, claiming that the Secret Service would not bring him there and that there was rain, which eventually turned out to be false. Trump has also touched on the late senator John McCain’s time as a war prisoner in Vietnam, saying that McCain was no war hero.
According to someone knowledgeable in the matter, Trump had often asked why Americans who served in Vietnam had gone to war at the time. Trump has also questioned in the past why Americans had to go to Iraq and Afghanistan and wondered what the soldiers “get out of it” from their time in service.
Trump, who was given a draft deferment for bone spurs, had also received deferments because of his education.
Democratic chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Adam Smith blasted Trump following the surfacing of the reports. Smith said the Trump claims that he loves the troops, but it is only because they are a part of his political strategy.
