It has been nearing a week since the explosive revelations by former national security adviser John Bolton were leaked to the press. As the impeachment trial is underway, Rick Wilson believes that President Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell may be getting nervous regarding the prospect of Bolton testifying during the impeachment trial.
Politicalflare reports that Wilson, a known critic of Trump and his administration, claims that both the President and McConnell are “sh*tting bricks* at the possibility that Bolton will take to the stand during the trial. This is due to the information that was revealed in Bolton’s manuscript for his memoir, which was a firsthand account of what went on during the Ukraine scandal that resulted in an impeachment trial, or added leverage by the Democrats in the third impeachment trial in United States history.
Wilson went on to explain in his piece for The Daily Beast, that Bolton’s soon-to-be-published book “has put a major political price for Republican senators who vote to acquit the president without hearing a single witness.” He also goes on to name republican senators like Cory Gardner, Martha McSally, and Susan Collins as those who are determined to stop witnesses from testifying for or against Trump, further landing the victory in the Democrats’ favor.
He also reveals that Trump’s polls in three key states like Colorado, Arizona, and Maine are “underwater and standing up for the president in those states will inevitably hurt their political standing.” Wilson also notes that the Republican senators are now under pressure due to the fact that the public will and are demanding witnesses to testify in the trial, a move that they have always utilized from the very beginning. This would ultimately leave the Republican senators with two options, either to finally agree to call for witnesses or face immense backlash from the general public.
Meanwhile, CNN reports that the White House has already issued a formal threat to Bolton and his lawyers to not publish the book due to it containing classified information. A letter sent to Bolton and his legal team revealed that he should not publish the memoir at least until he has omitted the classified information. One key information from the book was Bolton’s account of the Ukraine scandal, where the White House withheld millions in aid to the Ukrainian government unless they announced investigations into his Democratic rival, former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
