The United States is preparing to reopen as the social distancing period expires without any last-minute extension. However, as the elderly are the most at risk of contracting coronavirus, president Donald Trump declares the month of May as Older Americans Month.
ABC reports that Trump signed the proclamation declaring the month of May to be dedicated to senior citizens in America. This is an effort to protect the elderly, who are the most at risk of contracting and dying from the coronavirus pandemic. Trump also detailed the measures that his administration is going to take to make sure the senior citizens in America are protected, including sending protective gear to nursing homes as well as added home inspections as per the CARES act.
“That’s a spot we have to take care of. I guess you could call it a little bit of a weak spot, because things are happening at nursing homes, and we’re not happy about that. We don’t want it to happen,” said Trump.
The president also announced that the administration is in the process of finalizing a new measure that would require nursing homes to report cases of the coronavirus directly to the CDC. Trump added that the testing data for these cases would be posted online for easy viewing and that there would be a “Coronavirus Commission for Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes.”
The commission would be made up of health experts as well as state and local authorities. The group would meet in May and provide their recommendations for further steps that would be taken to protect the elderly Americans.
Many public health experts still say that the administration was too slow to react and act and that the country was still falling short in producing a good number of coronavirus tests. Trump repeated some inaccuracies he made in previous briefings as well from the country’s trade relations with China, the Veterans’ Choice health care program, and the travel restrictions from China and Europe to non-American nationals.
Trump had also claimed that South Korean President Moon Jae In called him to compliment his administration’s work in terms of coronavirus testing. “The testing and the masks and all of the things: We’ve solved every problem. We solved it quickly,” said Trump.
However, Moon’s administration said that it would not disclose what was discussed.
