NEW YORK, April 17, 2016 -- Dr. Donald Milione, Chiropractor, of the Upper East Side of Manhattan, recently launched a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of good workplace ergonomics. Dr. Milione routinely helps patients who have developed various musculoskeletal disorders, or MSDs, due to poor workplace ergonomics and hopes that by raising awareness about the issue, he can help others avoid similar problems. "Fortunately, we have plenty of options to offer those who suffer from chronic pain due to musculoskeletal disorders," said Dr. Milione. "However, avoiding such issues in the first place is even better, and adhering to appropriate workplace ergonomics is often an effective way to do so."
Musculoskeletal disorders due to poor ergonomics are most typically caused, sped up or exacerbated by repeated motions of the body--especially when vibrations, contact stresses, awkward postures and other issues are at play. Over time, nerves, tendons, bones and fluid in the arms, wrists, hands, shoulders, neck and back may become negatively impacted by repetitive motions, poor positioning and other ergonomic-related issues. Oftentimes, fluid pressure increases, putting excessive strain and compression on nearby nerves. If the situation isn't addressed, nerve damage may occur. One of the most common examples of a musculoskeletal disorder brought on by poor workplace ergonomics is carpal tunnel syndrome. In this case, the median nerve in the wrist becomes compressed over time and ultimately becomes damaged.
While Dr. Donald Milione, Chiropractor offers many chiropractic techniques for correcting and improving musculoskeletal disorders, the chiropractor firmly believes that adopting safe workplace ergonomics dramatically reduces the risk of developing MSDs in the first place. The doctor and his team are therefore educating patients about ergonomics and how to protect themselves on the job. "Luckily, most of the changes that must be made are simple to implement, and there's typically no need to spend a lot of money to achieve them," said Dr. Milione.
For example, maintaining a healthy posture while working at a desk is a critical part of protecting the musculoskeletal system. The chiropractor urges workers to purposefully change their positions every now and then and to take regular breaks, including getting up from the desk and going for quick walks. Workers should use document stands to avoid straining their necks while typing. The keyboard should be directly in front of the worker, and it should be at elbow height. "The type of chair that's used is crucial too," added Dr. Milione. "It's well worth it to invest in an adjustable, ergonomic chair."
