EU president to make first assessment of Progress of agenda today

European People's Party - Jean-Claude Juncker

At his State of the Union speech before the EU parliament, EU Commission President Juncker is expected to make a first assessment of the progress of the agenda he set last year . Juncker will no doubt gloat over the quick adoption of the European Fund for Strategic Investment, which will be operational during the autumn.

He will reiterate the EU Commission's objectives to enhance the single market, providing an update on the Digital Single Market and the Capital Market Union, two of the most important integration areas the Juncker Commission has decided to focus on.

"Juncker is also expected to reiterate the need for more integration at the euro area level with the aim of moving towards a fiscal union over the medium term, in line with the recently published Five Presidents' Report", say Societe Generale.

In terms of the international scene, three topics will dominate Juncker's speech. Firstly, with the Climate Change Summit due in Paris at the end of the year, Juncker is likely to review EU energy policy and the progress made since the Energy Union framework (with specific targets) was agreed upon last year.
