Europe might see upheavals in 2017 similar to Trump and Brexit in 2016

In two of the major voting around the world, UK referendum on the European Union and the US election, people rejected left wing liberal values and voted in favor of nationalism. One of the prominent Brexiteers, the former leader of the UK Independence party Nigel Farage predicted well before the referendum (more than a decade ago) that he would lead a campaign to take Britain out of the European Union. He was laughed at then. That same Mr. Farage, after the UK opted out of the European Union predicted that the United Kingdom will not be the last country to leave the European Union.

He might get it right if the left-wing liberals fail to learn lessons from Brexit. The lesson is that the European Union has lost its touch with the people. The test of that lies ahead, for some key countries in the European Union.

  • On December 4th, people of Italy get to vote on a referendum on key constitutional reforms. Political future of the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi lies on that referendum.
  • On December 4th, Austria gets to vote on the Presidential elect. In this election, right-wing Austrian Freedom party could come to power and hold a similar referendum like that of the UK.
  • On March 15 2017, Netherlands goes to election, where again a right-wing national party threatens to win the election and hold a similar referendum.
  • April/May 2017: French election. Rightwing activist Marine la Pen can become the next president and take the exit route.
  • German chancellor Angela Merkel is planning to become the chancellor for a fourth time and this election is the most uncertain for her again due to the rise of the rightwing party; Alternate for Germany.
