The Federal Bureau of Investigation has surged additional investigative resources and personnel to Minnesota, according to FBI Director Kash Patel, marking a significant escalation in federal fraud investigations that have drawn national attention. The move comes as the Trump administration intensifies scrutiny of alleged misuse of federal funds in the state, with a particular focus on cases that officials say involve millions of dollars intended for social services.
In recent weeks, federal authorities have portrayed Minnesota as a hotspot for large-scale fraud schemes, frequently referencing cases connected to the state’s Somali immigrant community. These investigations have sparked controversy, as immigrant-rights advocates argue that the administration is using fraud probes as a pretext to target Somali immigrants more broadly, fueling concerns about discrimination and political motivation.
Patel made his comments on Sunday, citing “recent social media reports in Minnesota,” though he did not provide specific details. The FBI declined to elaborate further on the surge in resources. The statement followed the circulation of an online video that allegedly showed inactive daycare facilities receiving public funding as part of a wider network of suspected fraudulent activities. The video gained traction after being shared by U.S. Representative Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican, who publicly called on Governor Tim Walz to respond. Vice President JD Vance amplified the issue by sharing the video with his followers on X the following day.
According to CBS News, most individuals charged in major fraud cases recently announced in Minnesota are of Somali descent, citing the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota. The Minnesota Star Tribune has reported ongoing clashes between federal prosecutors and state officials over how these investigations have been conducted, underscoring tensions between state and federal authorities.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly referenced the Minnesota fraud investigations in his criticism of the Somali diaspora and of Governor Walz, who served as the Democratic nominee for vice president in the 2024 election.
