Is Facebook aiming to build a teleporter? It appears to be so, according to a statement by Facebook's chief technical officer, Mike Schroepfer. Business Insider quoted Schroepfer, who revealed the company’s plans at a press event prior to his appearance at the Dublin Web Summit. Facebook is purportedly aiming to have the technology by year 2025 with the help of virtual reality technology Oculus Rift.
"Facebook wants to build a device that allows you to be anywhere you want, with anyone, regardless of geographic boundaries," he added.
Mashable said the teleporter is not about transporting physical beings from one point to another, but improving the virtual reality experience to a point that the wearer is tricked into believing he is somewhere where is not. And with the acquisition of the company behind Oculus Rift last year, the latter’s recent advances Touch (a tool that replicates the wearer’s natural movements in virtual reality) and Surreal Vision (technology that allows real-time live streaming of an actual environment in virtual reality) is said to be laying the groundwork to achieve such a lofty goal.
