Should Google, Yahoo and other search engines fear about Facebook’s latest feature? That appears to be the case as the social media platform announces its new Expanded Search feature.
According to the company, anyone can access what is allowed to see in Facebook’s 2 trillion posts index, including all people and Pages, by simply typing the right keywords on its Search dialog box. The results, TechCrunch said, will range from highlight posts coming from trusted news sources from the people in your social network to strangers.
As such, Facebook Product Manager Rousseau Kazi said to The Verge that the Search feature has the capacity to tell anyone what’s trending or breaking. The results, he said are grouped in a way for people to get the full story.
When TechCrunch asked how Facebook intends to monetize on the Search feature, VP of Search Tom Stocky confided that the company is not focused on it yet.
“Because the business model for search is so well understood, we know it will come when it makes sense,” he added.
