AeroMobil is the first company to put an actual flying car into the mass consumer market, though, this is already a stretch due to the exorbitant prices of the products. In any case, anyone interested in owning their own private, flying vehicle can pre-order now. The land/aircraft will be hitting the roads and skies in 2020 and the starting price is an arm, a leg, and an eyeball.
Now, it’s worth noting that because of the nature of the vehicle, there are going to be some restrictions on who can own it. For starters, only customers who are licensed pilots will be able to get permission to actually buy one, The New York Post reports. There’s also the $1.3 million base price, which is an amount that not everyone will be able to afford.
This offer by AeroMobil is basically a hybrid, which can transform into both a car and a miniature helicopter in minutes. It’s equipped with an engine to power the tires when on the road and it’s got propellers for when drivers want to take to the skies.
As to how viable this product is in terms of actual profitability, the numerous other companies working on the same thing indicates that there is certainly some interest in the market. However, University of Warwick professor, Philip Mawby is of the opinion that it is going to be an exclusively niche product.
“I think it’s going to be a very niche product,” Mawby said. “The technology is there… The question is bringing it to the market at an affordable cost, and making it a useful product.”
For some technical details, the unit can reach 100mph when on the ground and 224mph in the air, Tech Crunch reports. It has a mileage 434 miles with a full tank in car form, while it can fly for about 466 miles when maintaining only 75 percent of its maximum flight speed.
