Video games land on the mobile platform all the time, with ports of classic titles such as Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IX making their way to smartphones. There are also video games that were specifically made for mobile devices, which are hugely popular, especially in the Asian market. However, Epic Games is set to blow all of these examples out of the water with the port of Fortnite to mobile.
This port is an incredibly rare occasion where a game of the current generation that is played on more powerful platforms like the PC and consoles is being brought over to the much weaker mobile devices. As Forbes notes, this is an incredibly big deal for all industries involved, largely because of how fast Epic moved on this.
With regards to Fortnite and its accompanying Battle Royale mode, the developers have displayed an incredible level of dedication to providing meaty content into the game in such short periods of time. What Epic has managed to accomplish with the game is practically unprecedented, at least on this scale.
Fast updates, fun gameplay, interesting additions, and efficient patches have become just some of the reasons for why Fortnite is so popular. Now, Epic is the first to bring its game to mobile within the same generation as it was released and while it’s still running on other platforms.
By bringing the game to mobile, there’s also a huge chance that it will get a huge boost in player numbers if the popularity of mobile knockoffs of games like PUBG is anything to go by. What’s more, Fortnite doesn’t suffer anywhere close to the same toxic cheating environment that the paid 100-player game is fast becoming known for.
As icing on the cake, Epic also announced that all of these platforms will feature cross-play. This means that players on the PC, the Xbox On, and mobile devices will be able to play against each other, which in itself is already a huge development. Basically, the company is breaking all kinds of barriers with just this one move.
