General Motors (NYSE: GM) reported stronger-than-expected second-quarter 2026 earnings on Tuesday, beating Wall Street estimates on both profit and revenue while raising its full-year financial guidance for the second time this year.
The Detroit-based automaker posted adjusted earnings per share of $3.57, exceeding analysts’ expectations of $3.18. Revenue climbed 1.9% year over year to $48.0 billion, also topping the consensus forecast of $46.99 billion and improving from $47.1 billion in the same quarter last year.
Following the results, General Motors increased its 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $12.00-$14.00, compared with its previous outlook of $11.50-$13.50. The midpoint of $13.00 is above analysts’ average estimate of $12.79. The company also raised its adjusted EBIT forecast to $14.0 billion-$16.0 billion, up from the prior range of $13.5 billion-$15.5 billion. Adjusted automotive free cash flow guidance was lifted to $9.5 billion-$11.5 billion, compared with the earlier outlook of $9.0 billion-$11.0 billion.
Despite the upbeat financial performance and improved outlook, GM shares fell about 3.3% in early trading after the earnings release.
Adjusted EBIT for the quarter increased 29.8% to $3.9 billion, compared with $3.0 billion a year earlier. Meanwhile, net income attributable to stockholders declined to $1.3 billion from $1.9 billion in the prior-year quarter. The company’s adjusted EBIT margin improved to 8.2%, up from 6.4% in the second quarter of 2025.
GM North America remained the primary growth driver, generating $3.4 billion in adjusted EBIT with an 8.6% margin, compared with $2.4 billion and a 6.1% margin a year earlier. GM International recorded adjusted EBIT of $190 million, while China equity income reached $83 million. GM Financial contributed $605 million in adjusted earnings before tax.
The automaker also reported strong cash generation. Automotive operating cash flow rose 9% year over year to $5.1 billion, while adjusted automotive free cash flow jumped 78% to $5.0 billion from $2.8 billion. In addition, GM’s board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.18 per share, payable on September 17, 2026, to shareholders of record as of September 4, 2026.
