As yet another proof that the internet is now an inseparable part of daily life for Americans, GM partnered with AT&T to offer an internet package to customers with unlimited data. What’s more, it can also turn the car into a mobile hotspot with 4G connection. If this works out, it would only be a matter of time before other carmakers follow suit.
The new package directly relates to GM’s OnStar network, which is basically responsible for features like GPS, navigation, diagnostics, and remote access, Android Police reports. With its new partnership with AT&T, GM is about to turn this feature into a conduit for unlimited internet access for only $20 a month. This will allow anyone inside the car or within the vicinity to connect up to 7 devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets without worrying about running out of data.
Considering just how many cars GM has that are capable of actually providing this kind of service, the company is looking at millions of prospective customers right now. Chevrolet alone has over 3.1 million units that can provide mobile hotspots for customers who start paying for the package. Many are already saying that it could be an attractive offer for those who are often on long road trips.
As to why GM decided to start offering this package now, the company says that it’s because 4G usage with its OnStar service had reach optimum levels recently, USA Today reports. In 2016, owners of Chevrolet vehicles used the 4G plans that they had at an increased rate of 200 percent compared to 2015.
This trend moves in tandem with the pattern that mobile carriers are seeing as well, with data users becoming increasing voracious with the content that they are consuming. As such, GM is seeing an increased need to provide said users with the kind of internet connection that would put their minds at ease.
