Based on the number of good reviews for both AAA and indie video games, it would appear that 2016 is shaping up to be one of the best years for video game enthusiasts. Considering that the video game industry is expected to earn a global total of nearly $100 billion according to a report by Newzoo, this can only be good news for gamers who are set to spend their money on their favorite titles.

In an article by Kotaku, author Kirk Hamilton highlights some of the best video game titles that have been released so far, particularly the ones that exceeded all expectations. He pays particular attention to “Doom” by “iD Software,” which beat all the odds by being a spectacular shooter despite low expectations.

Games that can do this are considered few and far in between, which is a significant achievement in and of itself. When combined with all the other titles that received critical acclaim over the last 5 months, a trend starts to show.

Some other examples of great games that have come out since the start of the year include the indie puzzle game “The Witness,” which is one of the most highly regarded non-AAA titles so far. The zombie action game “Dying Light: The Following” was also well-received, along with the strategic turn-based title, “XCOM 2.”

While there is no guarantee that the momentum created by these games will continue until the end of the year, some promising titles that have yet to be released offer hope. The mega-sandbox, procedurally generated game “No Man’s Sky” is just one example of highly anticipated games that will be released a few months from now, particularly in light of the fervor that some excited fans are displaying with regards to it. This title from indie developer “Hello Games” already caused gamers to issue death threats over a delay, so it must be promising indeed.
