Global Geo-political Series: Kremlin affirms Trump statement of ‘dangerous low’ Russia relations

After President Trump was forced to sign a piece of legislation this week that imposes new sanctions on Russia that angered America’s European partners as it might prove fatal for Europe’s energy security, Trump lashed out at Congress by tweeting, “Our relationship with Russia is at an all-time & very dangerous low. You can thank Congress, the same people that can't even give us HCare!”

The new sanctions target Russia’s energy and mining sectors as well as Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which is supposed to bring Russian gas to Germany and make Germany an important energy trading hub in the European Union. Moscow described the new sanctions as a full-scale trade war against Russia and warned that Russia would retaliate.  The new act strips the authority of the US presidential office to lift sanctions imposed on Russia by executive orders signed by former President Barack Obama, requiring Trump to seek congressional approval for such an act. It also targets companies in third countries with penalties for cooperating with Russia on energy projects.

After President Trump lashed out at Congress on Twitter, Kremlin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that he agrees with the opinion that US-Russia relations at a dangerous low. He said, “We fully agree with this opinion…..The danger may come from the lack of cooperation and interaction on issues crucial for our peoples and nations.”

US-Russia relation is extremely critical for the majority of the global affairs if one wants to find a peaceful solution. Without better relations, the United States is not likely to be able to find a solution for not only Syria but Iran and North Korea as well.
