French president Emmanuel Macron has weighed in on Syria crisis and civil war that continues to rage for six years now. According to the newly elected President, who has met with both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, there is currently no viable alternative to Bashar Assad to prevent Syria from turning into a failed state, which is a departing from his predecessor’s position that the Syrian leader must be toppled to stabilize the war-torn country.
In an interview with eight European newspapers, Mr. Macron said, “The new perspective that I have had on this subject is that I have not stated that Bashar al-Assad’s departure is a pre-condition for everything because nobody has shown me a legitimate successor”. Mr. Macron added that his lines are clear. Firstly, a complete fight against all terrorist groups and for that everybody’s cooperation needed especially Russia’s to eradicate those groups. He also mentioned that he would not allow US neo-conservatism to seep into France and French policy will be aimed at stability in Syria, rather than getting into a Libya-style conflict and failed state where terrorists flourish.
He seems to share a convergent view with the Russian President while lawmakers at Washington are preparing for sanctions against Russia.
