Hopes for a Middle East peace deal involving both Israel and Palestine shot up after the meeting between the US President Donald Trump and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. In a joint news conference, President Trump said that his administration is prepared to do whatever it takes to help secure a historic peace deal between the Israeli and Palestinian people. President Trump said, “Over the course of my lifetime, I’ve heard perhaps the toughest deal to make is the deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians……..Let’s see if we can prove them wrong.” President Trump added that while the deal would have to be agreed upon by Israelis and Palestinians, his administration would act as a mediator, facilitator, and arbitrator to the negotiations.
President Abbas expressed his confidence that under the stewardship of President Trump a historic peace deal is possible and added that the United States and Palestine could be true partners to bring about a historic peace treaty. He also expressed that his preferred solution was to return to the borders of 1967 between Israel and Palestine.
President Trump’s flexible position is one of the key factors that could help bring about a deal. He has said that he is open to either of one state or two state solutions as long as it is agreed by the two. This has been a mark deviation from the historical stance of the United States since 1999 when based on the signing of Oslo accord the support for a two-state solution was agreed upon. President Trump has made his son-in-law Jared Kushner his Middle East convoy with this special task of bringing peace between Israel and Palestine.
