A boat seizure by Israeli naval force has triggered a diplomatic row between Israel and Norway. Norway has asked Israel to explain the legal grounds for detaining a Norwegian-flagged fishing boat seized, which was reportedly bringing aid to Gaza. Norway has formally asked Israel for clarification and circumstances that led to this allegedly illegal seizure.
Norwegian foreign ministry has announced that its diplomats in Israel had been providing consular assistance to five Norwegians who were among the 22 passengers and crew detained onboard the vessel Kaarstein on Sunday. There were two Israelis in the boat, who are reportedly released.
Torstein Dahle, head of the group Ship to Gaza Norway which organized the shipment, said it was the first Norwegian aid vessel to attempt to breach the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
The Israeli authority is likely to cite security concerns with regard to Hamas militant group smuggling weaponry via boats, however, there has been no comments from the Israeli side so far. The diplomatic tension comes at a time when Israel is being widely criticized for the recent escalation of violence in Gaza and its military response to the region.
