Google’s YouTube and NFL have struck a partnership deal worth $2 billion this week. The companies agreed to team up to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to more viewers through YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels.
YouTube and NFL will start working together for the 2023 season of the National Football League games. The matches will be available on the said YouTube platforms so more fans can easily view the games.
The companies signed a multi-year deal for the exclusive streaming of the NFL Sunday Ticket in the United States and the leading video service shared that their collaboration comes as more content is being transferred from traditional TV to online streaming. It was noted that the new generation of viewers spends more time on streaming platforms than in front of television sets.
According to Reuters, the NFL said on Thursday, Dec. 22, that the Sunday Ticket subscription package on YouTube is already its second media rights deal with the platform. For the rights, the video streaming giant will shell out $2 billion per year, an amount that will be paid to NFL.
"We are excited to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels and usher in a new era of how fans across the United States watch and follow the NFL," Roger Goodell, NFL’s commissioner, said in a blog post. "For a number of years we have been focused on increased digital distribution of our games and this partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans."
YouTube’s chief executive officer, Susan Wojcicki, also commented regarding the NFL deal, “YouTube has long been a home for football fans, whether they are streaming live games, keeping up with their home team, or watching the best plays in highlights.
She further said that they are very thrilled to continue working together with NFL “to make YouTube a great place for sports lovers everywhere. “Through this expanded partnership with the NFL, viewers will now also be able to experience the game they love in compelling and innovative ways,” the YouTube chief added.
