GOUVERNEUR, N.Y., April 27, 2017 -- Gouverneur Bancorp, Inc. (OTC Pink:GOVB) (the “Company”) and its subsidiary, Gouverneur Savings and Loan Association (the “Bank”), which operate on a fiscal year ending on September 30, today announced results for the second quarter and six month period ended March 31, 2017.
For the three months ended March 31, 2017, the Company reported net income of $268,000, or $0.12 per diluted share, representing an increase of $45,000, or 20.18% more than last year’s net income of $223,000, or $0.10 per diluted share. The annualized returns on average assets and average equity for the three months ended March 31, 2017 were 0.79% and 3.64%, respectively, compared to 0.65% and 3.10%, respectively, for the three months ended March 31, 2016.
For the six months ended March 31, 2017, the Company reported net income of $699,000, or $0.31 per diluted share, representing an increase of $193,000, or 38.14% from last year’s net income of $506,000, or $0.23 per diluted share. The annualized returns on average assets and average equity for the six months ended March 31, 2017 were 1.03% and 4.70%, respectively, compared to 0.73% and 3.50%, respectively, during the six months ended March 31, 2016.
Since September 30, 2016, total assets decreased $3.51 million, or 2.48%, from $141.40 million to $137.90 million at March 31, 2017. Net loans decreased $2.21 million, from $103.16 million to $100.95 million while securities available-for-sale decreased $0.32 million, from $19.09 million to $18.77 million over the same period.
Deposits decreased $0.48 million, or 0.57%, from $83.85 million at September 30, 2016 to $83.37 million at March 31, 2017. Advances from the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York decreased $2.25 million, or 10.47%, from $21.50 million at September 30, 2016 to $19.25 million at March 31, 2017.
Stockholders’ equity was $30.00 million at March 31, 2017 and $29.87 million at September 30, 2016. The book value of Gouverneur Bancorp, Inc. was $13.50 per common share based on 2,222,749 shares outstanding at March 31, 2017. On March 31, 2017, the Company paid a semi-annual cash dividend of $0.17 per share to public shareholders of record on March 15, 2017. Cambray Mutual Holding Company, the Company’s parent mutual holding company and majority shareholder, waived its right to receive that dividend.
For the six months ended March 31, 2017, after a $60,000 provision for loan losses, net income increased by $193,000; interest income decreased $88,000 and interest expense decreased $107,000 from the same period last year. Interest rate spread remains strong for the period at 4.34%.

We continue to explore cost savings in new sources of income producing products and increasing asset quality. Margins remain stressed as the short term rates have increased while long term continues to see lower rate pressure. We believe the lower interest rate environment will persist.”
