King Charles III and Queen Camilla paid tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks during a solemn visit to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. The royal couple laid a floral arrangement at the site where the World Trade Center’s twin towers once stood, marking a moment of remembrance and unity between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Accompanied by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the king and queen were guided to one of the reflecting pools that outline the original footprints of the destroyed towers. King Charles placed a bouquet of white lilacs, daffodils, and peonies on the engraved bronze parapet bearing the names of those who lost their lives. A handwritten note expressed condolences and solidarity, honoring the nearly 2,800 victims killed in New York during the attacks.

The visit comes at a time of political tension between the UK and the US. President Donald Trump recently criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for declining to support the US and Israel in escalating conflict with Iran. Despite this, King Charles emphasized the longstanding alliance between the two nations, referencing shared history, military cooperation, and the importance of NATO during a speech to the US Congress.

During a White House state dinner, Trump claimed that King Charles agreed with his stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, Buckingham Palace clarified that the monarch remains aligned with the UK government’s established policy on nuclear non-proliferation and does not act as a political spokesperson.

The royal visit also highlighted community engagement. In Harlem, King Charles visited a local urban farming initiative focused on combating food insecurity, where he interacted with children and participated in feeding chickens. Meanwhile, Queen Camilla attended a literary event at the New York Public Library celebrating Winnie-the-Pooh’s 100th anniversary and met with representatives from domestic violence charities.

This four-day state visit marks the 250th anniversary of American independence, reinforcing cultural and diplomatic ties while honoring shared history.
