Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey has been through a lot in her life leading up to “Grey's Anatomy” season 15. Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) death has been a specter over Meredith as her relationship with Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) post-McDreamy did not last long.
After Riggs, the head of general surgery simply focused on her practice rather than allowing herself to love again. While “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 is looking to revitalize Meredith Grey's love life, Ellen Pompeo's recent statements about her future with the show have caused some fan concern.
In an interview with Us Weekly prior to “Grey's Anatomy” season 15's broadcast, Ellen Pompeo mentioned looking forward to enjoying life after the show ends. Pompeo told the publication that while the end of the series may be close, ending the series will be a decision made jointly by her and “Grey's Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes.
In addition, in a video interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ellen Pompeo mentions that while she does not have an official announcement about her future with “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 and beyond, she does feel that the show “has told the majority of stories” that could be told. While such statements definitely make fans worry about Ellen Pompeo's impending departure, such worries may be premature.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 showrunner Krista Vernoff addressed questions about Ellen Pompeo's statements regarding the future of “Grey's Anatomy.” When asked if she knew about a potential endgame for Meredith and the series as a whole, Vernoff answered that she did not know anything about the issue. Vernoff also emphasized that the decision to write the end of Meredith's story is something that has yet to be discussed by the show's star, creator, and ABC.
Vernoff's last statement can be a comfort to fans who may be thinking that “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 will be the show's last. While all good things must come to an end, it looks like “Grey's Anatomy” season 15 and beyond are still safe waters to tread as long as the people behind the show continue to enjoy creating stories about Meredith and her team.
