“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 is arguably one – if not – the most anticipated entry for the medical drama since it began in 2005. This is because the showrunners have taken big risks in its plotline in an attempt to bring a fresh narrative to the series’ formula.
One of the cliffhangers that “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 is set to address is the incarceration of DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) due to the actions of Mer (Ellen Pompeo). Although Mer’s decision came from a noble place, the process in which she handled things violated the law, committing insurance fraud in an attempt to help a struggling immigrant family, THR reported.
With this setup, one can’t help but feel that “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 is wading into political territory. But showrunner Krista Vernoff clarified that they’re not going to explore that particular narrative. Instead, Mer’s situation is rooted in the fact that she’s been a character who’s been written as someone who despises rules that go against her principles.
While the writers were willing to let Mer off the hook for previous offenses, they’re committed to having her fix the mess she’s in to add more tension in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16. Vernoff explained that frustration towards a broken system is the main drive for Mer’s poor choices.
“The very nature of what Meredith did here was an argument for reform because she was confronting and talking about a really broken system. The system was so broken, and it was just enraging to her,” Vernoff said. Complicating matters further is that fact that Mer finally confessed her affection towards DeLuca, something that has been teased throughout the entirety of the previous installment. It would be curious to see how Mer will pull herself out of the hole she’s currently in, especially now that she’s lost her position in Grey Sloan. Fortunately, it won’t be long before all of these gets resolve as “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 is slated to return on September.
