One of the top things that people worry about in their community is a crime. It’s something that can affect anyone at any time, and feeling safe is something everyone wants to achieve. While eliminating crime and your exposure to it is extremely difficult, there are things you can do to minimize your risk and protect you and your family.
Be Prepared
This does not mean you have to be afraid to leave the house or refrain from going out at night. You want to enjoy your town and have fun with your friends. However, you should make sure that you are safe, especially if you live in an area that has a high crime rate such as urban towns or cities.
Therefore, preparing your journey and what you do is a sensible precaution. If you are going out at night, think about where you’re going and where you can park that is not isolated. Meet friends in a public place and try not to walk around alone, especially in poorly lit conditions.
Cell Phones
Cell phones have made a big impact on personal safety. Not only because you can call for help from virtually anywhere, but also because they can take photos and voice recordings of incidents. If you are involved in a fight or an assault, for example, it can sometimes be difficult for the Police to ascertain what happened. Also, it would help your criminal defense lawyer if you had evidence, making your case much cleaner.
Therefore, it is a good idea to always take your cell phone with you whenever you go out; also making sure that it’s charged and ready to go. Most cell phones will let you make a call to emergency services for free. If you have children who go out on their own, they will need a cell phone as well, and it’s a good idea to make sure they know how to call 911.
If you are worried about a situation, record what’s happening and call for help while trying to get to a safe place.
Confidence
Tourists are often preyed upon by opportunist thieves because they give a certain appearance. They are usually wandering around looking lost or confused and usually distracted. This can lead a potential thief to think they are an easy target.
This is why it’s important to plan your route, appear confident that you know where you’re going and don’t use your phone or headphones if you are on your own. These can not only distract you, but you won’t be able to hear if anyone’s behind you.
Don’t be tempted to stop if someone asks you for a light or money, just say no and keep walking. You don’t have to be rude, just confident in your surroundings and your manner.
If you are still feeling a little worried about your safety, then enrolling in a self-defense class can sometimes help to boost your confidence. It will also help you to remain calm if something happens and be able to act in a way that may allow you to escape.
